uthor Sandy Stern couldn't agree more. "By learning
to love and respect the animals, children will learn to love and respect each other", says the
actress best known as Canada's first-ever "Romper Room" teacher.
Safaris in Africa and trips to the Galapagos - as
well as an innate love of animals - inspired the former children's entertainer to pen a
compassionate story about a young, mischievous orangutan named Ori.
Set in the tropical rain forests of Indonesia, The
Misadventure of Ori Tang features apes and monkeys, rhinos, snakes, a crocodile and a one-fanged
tiger, as well as a chorus of birds, overcoming their differences and working together to rescue
Ori after he is kidnapped by humans.
The orangutan, highly endangered and closest to the
author's heart, not only serves as the main character in the book but also as Stern's motivation
for launching a project on endangered species called The Friendimals ProjectTM.
According to the actress turned writer, a
"friendimal" is an endangered or abused animal. The concept behind both the project and the book
is to teach children about endangered animals through stories and song.
The Misadventures of Ori Tang is the first book
of its kind to relate real-life dangers effecting animals today - dwindling rain forests, timbering
and kidnapping - in a storybook format.
"I thought writing a book about endangered animals
would be the best way to convey a message of love, protection and tolerance to our children," says
Stern.
